The Fritz Bauer Forum is being established at the main cemetery at Havkenscheid (Feldmark 107) as an international place for research, educational activities, art and dialogue in Bochum. Following the legacy of the lawyer and Holocaust survivor Dr. Fritz Bauer (1903-1968), the Forum promotes the discussion of democracy and human rights. The centerpiece is the former Havkenscheid Mourning Hall, which will be converted into the Fritz Bauer Library, and the adjacent former municipal yard, which will become an international venue for seminars, workshops, art and media.
The design of the former mourning hall is by Bochum’s city architect Ferdinand Keilmann (1907- 1979), who was a member of the NSDAP and joined the SPD after the war. After 1945, Keilmann went through the denazification procedure twice, after which he was appointed to the Bochum Department of Structural Engineering.
The guided tours will highlight the history of the site and its new use by the Fritz Bauer Forum.
